The 2024 Chiayi City Sports Games started with badminton games at Xingjia Elementary School. In the men’s doubles group, Chen Shijie and Chang Kaicheng from Chiayi Industrial High School played very well and won their first match.
The two players worked together with great teamwork. They used strong smashes and smart moves to win points quickly. Because of this, they won the game and moved on to the next round.
After the game, Chen and Chang said they were happy but also knew they made some mistakes. They said they didn’t fix their errors quickly during the game, and they want to do better next time.
Chen and Chang also shared that winning is not easy. Sometimes, practice is very tiring. In high school, the pressure from older teammates made them want to quit. But because they love badminton and have big goals, they kept going and worked hard.
Now, they are proud of their win and hope to play even better in the next game!
Precision and Passion — Kids Battle It Out in School Ping Pong League
The Annual Chiayi City Sports Day is here, and top local table tennis players will compete, including Li Guande(李冠德), a 6th grader from Chongwen Elementary School. Li developed an interest in table tennis in second grade, supported by his parents, and is now the captain of his school team.
Becoming team captain took a lot of dedication. Li practices for about an hour and a half each day. One of his biggest challenges was mastering the spin technique, which he eventually turned into one of his strongest skills through focused training.
Li looks up to professional player Lin Yun-Ju, who has represented Taiwan in international tournaments like the Olympics. Inspired by Lin, Li works hard—even during rest time—to sharpen his abilities.
With his strong commitment, talent, and consistent effort, Li is excited to compete and demonstrate his skills in the upcoming sports event. Many believe he will perform brilliantly and continue to grow as a table tennis player.
Table tennis is a popular sport in schools, and CHANG,I-CHIEH(張翌頡), a student from Lan tan Elementary School, is one of its passionate young players. He began playing in third grade, driven by genuine interest. Now, he dedicates about an hour each day to practice, focusing on basic skills and refining his technique. He believes daily practice is essential for improvement.
One of the biggest challenges for Jay has been mastering advanced techniques like the “side-step” and “loop drive,” which require speed and precision. Despite the difficulty, he has overcome these through persistence and hard work.
Jay has already participated in 622 matches and earned a 6th place finish in singles—a result that strengthened his love for the sport and encouraged him to aim even higher. His next goal is to win against players from Jiabei Elementary School in an upcoming competition, where he hopes to fully demonstrate his improved skills.
Jay also looks up to Lin Xi-Ru, a professional table tennis player whose skills and resilience inspire him. Lin serves as a role model, motivating Jay to work harder and dream bigger.
Jay’s journey is a reflection of determination and dedication. Through regular training and competition, he continues to challenge himself and pursue excellence in table tennis. We wish him the best of luck as he aims for new achievements in the sport he loves.

Overcoming Challenges with Perseverance and Passion in Badminton
Chiayi City Sports Games
This year’s Chiayi City Sports Games were different from previous years. There was no separate senior high school division; instead, all senior high school and adult competitors were combined into one category. This change was made because the Chiayi City Government wanted to directly select representatives for the National Games from this competition.
Chiayi City team competition
The Hsing Hwa High School badminton team joined forces with a senior who had just started college and coach, forming a team of 10 players together. They won first place in the Chiayi City team competition—a rare and prestigious achievement in recent years!
Among them was Chiang Ping-You, who played in the doubles category. He and his partner played the third match, but unfortunately, they did not win. Chiang Ping-You felt deeply responsible for the loss. However, his teammates recognized his dedication and self-discipline—even when he wasn’t playing, he would find ways to train and improve his fitness on his own.
Badminton Doubles Matches
During both the preliminary and semifinal rounds, Chiang Ping-You and his partner faced the same opponents.
In the preliminaries, they struggled to adjust in the first game, especially since Chiang was battling a cold, leading to a first-game loss. They nearly won the second game but fell just short.
In the semifinals, when they faced the same opponents again, they were fully prepared, shifting the pressure onto the other team. After splitting the first two games (one win, one loss), they fought hard in the decisive third game but narrowly lost 21-18.
Chiang Ping-You expressed, “Of course, I wanted to win. I really hoped we could win.”
However, he acknowledged the gap between sports class students and regular students. Unlike sports class athletes who train regularly, Chiang Ping-You only had one official practice session each week—Tuesdays from 4:30PM to 6:00 PM. The rest of the time, he had to find courts on his own, train in parking lots, and ask his coach for extra guidance outside of school hours. Given these limitations, his performance was already quite impressive.
Perseverance and Passion for Badminton
Chiang Ping-You’s dedication and perseverance reflect his passion for badminton and his determination to overcome challenges. Despite balancing academics and limited training time, he still performed exceptionally well in competitions, earning admiration from those around him.
Notably, he and his partner demonstrated strong adaptability when facing the same opponents for the second time. They handled pressure maturely and, even after losing the final game, maintained a positive mindset—a rare and commendable trait.
His story proves that even without the structured training of a sports program, discipline and determination can still lead to remarkable achievements. This kind of team spirit and personal perseverance is truly inspiring and serves as a model for others to learn from.
